Matt Boyd’s two-out, three-run double with two outs in the ninth gave the Oregon State baseball team a 5-4 victory over visiting Utah in the first game of the Beavers’ doubleheader Saturday.
The game marked the first of the day for the Beavers, who will play Portland in a second game Saturday night that has been moved up to an approximate 5:40 p.m. PT start.

Parker Berberet hit a solo shot in the seventh to narrow Utah’s three-run lead, which had stood at 4-1. The Beavers then loaded the bases against Utah relievers Zach Adams and Stephen Streich.

Boyd’s double, which fell down the right field line, came off Streich and sent the reliever to a 1-1 record this season. It scored John Tommasini, Brent Warren and Jared Norris and gave the Beavers their second one-run win this season.

Ryan Gorton worked a scoreless ninth for OSU to go to 1-0 this season.

Oregon State improved to 8-3 on the year and Utah fell to 6-7.

The Beavers got on the board in the fourth for a 1-0 lead. Adalberto Santos led off the offense with a single, then scored when Stefen Romero tripled to center.

Utah, however, matched the Beavers with a solo run in the sixth when Devin Walker grounded back to the pitcher, Greg Peavey, and the right-hander could only get the runner at first.

The Utes pulled ahead for good in the seventh, plating three runs off Peavey. Tyler Yagi broke the 1-1 tie with a one-run single to right, and later scored on a two-run single to right off the bat of Nick Kuroczko.

All three runs in the inning were credited to Peavey, who scattered five hits and four runs over 6 1/3 innings. It was his third start of the season, and he struck out six while walking four.

Bryn Card started for Utah. The lefty allowed five hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Jo Jo Sharrar led Utah with two hits while Kuroczko paced the Utes with two RBI.

IN GAME TWO VS. PORTLAND

Adalberto Santos hit his first home run of the season and the Oregon State baseball team overcame deficits of 4-0 and 5-2 for a 6-5 win over Portland Saturday night at Goss Stadium.

Oregon State improved to 2-0 on the day after downing Utah, 5-4, in the first game of the day Saturday. Oregon State is 9-3 on the year and 3-1 in one-run games.

“We had a combined 12 hits today, but we picked up two wins,” Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. “We did what we needed to get two victories and our pitching and defense really came through.”

Santos hit a two-run home run in the fifth to knock Portland’s lead to one, 5-4. The Beavers then scored two more in the sixth on back-to-back bases loaded walks to Santos and Stefen Romero.

The RBI via the walk in the sixth was Santos’ third of the game, marking his second multiple-RBI game of the season.

The walks were charged to Portland reliever Keeler Brynteson, who dropped to 2-2 this year after allowing two runs, a walk and two strikeouts in one inning. He did not allow a hit.

Brynteson followed starter Kyle Kraus, who went 4 1/3 innings. He scattered five hits and four runs – two earned – while striking out four.

Oregon State starter Tyler Waldron was the beneficiary of Oregon State’s comeback victory. He struck out 10 and walked one while allowing eight hits and all five Portland runs. Waldron improved to 2-1 on the year.

Sam Gaviglio came on in the eighth for his third appearance of the season and proceeded to shut down the Pilots, picking up his first save of the season.

Gaviglio and Waldron combined to retire the last 12 Portland batters of the game.

Portland (10-3 overall) got out to an early 3-0 lead and added a run in the third for a 4-0 lead. But Romero reached on a bases-loaded error by Portland third baseman Matt Mardesich in the bottom half of the third, allowing two runs to score, and slicing the Pilots’ lead to two runs.

Oregon State’s two runs were countered by Portland in the fifth when the Pilots scored a solo run, but Santos pulled the Beavers to within one in the bottom half of the inning.

Riley Henricks, Beau Fraser and C.J. Cullen each had two hits apiece to pace the Pilots. Fraser and Cullen also had two RBI in the loss.

Oregon State started the day in dramatic fashion, defeating Utah, 5-4, on a walkoff double by Matt Boyd. The freshman doubled down the right field line, scoring John Tommasini, Brent Warren and Jared Norris for the come-from-behind victory.

For Boyd, it was his second career multi-RBI effort. A native of Mercer Island, Wash., he came into the game with just seven career official at bats and three RBI.
