Special athletes work on motor skills
By Dan Bain
ROSEBURG - Family members and friends were cheering on special athletes from all over Douglas County at Fremont Middle School Thursday, for a day of sports activities.
It's the 19th year for the event where athletes with disabilities are paired up with a peer partner for the activities. The coordinator for the event, Kimberly Rammage said there are several activities they offer the kids. "They get to do bowling they can either use a ramp or use regular bowling. They get to do a ball launch. They get to do tee ball and basketball. They get to do some different switch activities which activate toys. They get to do a parachute with balls kind of flying around, obstacle course and golfing," said Rammage. Thursday afternoon, the athletes got to go outside and do some fishing and volunteer's from the Umpqua Fisherman's Association were on site to help out. Rammage said the peer partners also get a lot out of the experience. "Seems like they really get to know better the kids and they become a little more unified with their activities doing this. Its fun because it's a social event but they also get to understand how it works with the athletes and how they can help out," said Rammage. At the end of the day, the athletes got medals and the peer partners got certificates for participating in the event. |
