Glide Baseball Coach Wins Awards
By Jason Hink, Douglas County Sports OnlineGLIDE, Ore. -- A longtime local baseball coach has been named the Regional Coach of the Year for his efforts on the diamond. Earlier this year, Glide head coach Al Skinner was named Oregon's baseball Coach of the Year by the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association. Skinner went on to win the sectional award by beating out coaches from five other states including Washington, Montana, Idaho, Alaska and Wyoming. "Al was then eligible to compete for the national Coach of the Year honors," OACA Co-Executive Director Marv Heater said. "Unfortunately, he did not win the national award." In 20 seasons, Skinner has a career record of 351-145. He began his prep coaching career at Philomath, but has spent a majority of his time at Glide High School, where he has coached for 17 seasons. Skinner has led his teams to 12 conference championships, including a state title in 2006. He also served as the head coach for Roseburg's American Legion baseball team, Dr. Stewarts, from 1999-2001 and was Glide's head football coach for five years. "Baseball is my first love, but I really do enjoy coaching football," Skinner said. "Football is a 'go get 'em' sport, while baseball is more of a 'thinking man's' sport." The Oregon Athletic Coaches Association will honor Skinner and the other Oregon winners at its annual banquet in May.
