North Douglas upends Oakland in MVC battle
By Jason Hink, Douglas County Sports OnlineThe Mountain View Conference regular season title is still undecided after North Douglas downed previously unbeaten Oakland 25-21, 25-14, 8-25, 28-26 Tuesday night in Drain. The Warriors (12-1) won the first two games, but the Oakers (12-1) dominated game three 25-8. However, North Douglas finally put the match away with a 28-26 victory in game four. "Nobody was ahead by more than a couple of points in the last game," Warriors head coach Anne Campbell said. "It was a great win and I was thrilled to send our seniors out with a victory in their final conference home match." North Douglas sophomore Kassidee Rice had 15 kills and 10 digs, while junior Kaitlynn Rice added seven kills, 21 digs and 22 assists. Riddle (10-4) finished the regular season with a 25-19, 25-15, 25-10 over visiting Monroe; and Yoncalla (4-9) kept its postseason hopes alive with a five-game win at Central Linn. Devan Belshe had nine kills and teammates Vanessa Bentley and Courtney Hutchins combined for 17 assists in Roseburg's 25-11, 25-10, 25-18 victory over Grants Pass. The second-place Indians are now 7-2 in the Southwest Conference standings. Sutherlin pulled off the upset of the night with a 25-16, 17-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-6 win over Brookings-Harbor. It was the Bulldogs first league victory of the season, while the Bruins dropped to 5-3. Elsewhere, South Umpqua (3-6) and Douglas (1-7) both lost FWL matches on Tuesday. Days Creek (12-0) completed a perfect run through the Skyline League with a 17-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-23 win at Elkton. Even with the loss, the Elks (9-3) finished the regular season in second-place.
