Beavers stumble, then hold on against Bruins
By Henry Childs, KVAL.com SportsCORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Beavers avoided to get spooked on this Halloween matchup, as Oregon State held on against a rallying UCLA squad desperate for a win on Saturday, 26-19. The Beavers' James Rodgers provided the game winning score with under one minute remaining, a 17-yard run to put Oregon State on top for good. The elder Rodgers brother also caught ten passes for 106 yards. Earlier in the drive, quarterback Sean Canfield completed four of five passes to set up the big run by Rodgers. Canfield continued to play well on Saturday, completing 25 of 34 passes for 304 yards. He didn't throw for a touchdown, but another Beavers player did. Running back Jacquizz Rodgers threw for a touchdown, ran for 112 yards, and caught seven passes for 92 yards in the win. For the Bruins, freshman quarterback Kevin Prince may have had his best start in his young career. Prince completed 22 of 34 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns. Wide reciever Nelson Rosario was his main target, catching six passes for 152 yards and one touchdown. The Beavers got off to a fast start against the Bruins, scoring on a Justin Kahut field goal within the first five minutes of the game. In the second quarter, Kahut added another field goal to put the score at 6-0. Shortly afterwards, the Beavers got a little tricky, perhaps in honor of the holiday that fell on Saturday. Jacquizz Rodgers threw to tight end Brady Camp for a 14-yard touchdown, and the Beavers went up 13-0. After Oregon State forced a three and out, the Beavers drove down field, and Kahut kicked another field goal to put the halftime score at 16-0. UCLA finally got on the scoreboard in the third, with a short field goal by kicker Kai Forbath to get within 16-3. Kahut had a chance to match Forbath later in the quarter, but missed a 47-yard attempt. In the fourth and final quarter, things went back-and-forth, to say the least. Kahut made a 31-yard field goal to extend the lead to 19-3, but the Bruins weren't going to go down easily. The next UCLA drive resulted in a 58-yard touchdown pass from Prince to Rosario. The Bruins succeeded on the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 19-11 with just less than nine minutes remained. On their next posession, the Beavers were forced into a three and out. The Bruins took advantage afterwards, going 94 yards in ten plays, capping it off with a seven yard touchdown pass from Prince to receiver Taylor Embree to get within two. The ensuing two-point conversion was good when Prince found running back Johnathan Franklin, and the game was tied at 19 a piece with about two minutes remaining. The Beavers got back on track, going seven plays in 70 yards to go ahead 26-19, and that's where the score stayed after the Bruins couldn't score with 45 seconds left. Oregon State, 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10, play at No. 24 California next Saturday. UCLA, 3-5 and 0-5 in conference play, hosts Washington. |
