By Dan Bain KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- The Roseburg High School wrestling team opened the season ranked as the number one team in the state, and they fully expect to be at the top when the season ends in February. Coach Steve Lander's team won the West Salem Invitational last week, and showing how deep they are, their second team was third in the nine-team tournament. With several state placers plus 20 district placers back this year, they expect to be competing for their third state championship in four years at the end of the season. Sam Mecham, who won his first state title last year, is looking for another one this year. "Sam is actually defending state champion, and Danny Faas and Dylan Fors, and then Seth Thomas won state as a freshman, so we've got a lot of very good guys, I think we have nine state placers from last year's team," said Lander. Last year, the Indians were plagued by injuries late in the season and still finished second in the state meet. They have a potential state champion back this year in Drew Van Anrooy, who missed all of last year with an injury. "He has rehabbed real well, he wrestled last spring and summer in some regional and national matches, so he probably had 30 matches Meanwhile, their intra-squad matches are tougher than most of their regular matches, with a very deep team that is positioned to win it's fourth straight Southwest Conference title. The first time you can see the Indians at home is on Thursday, December 17, when they take on North Medford at Stew Robertson gym, and they have only two other matches at home this year. |
