Lookingglass Block Run raises money for cross-country teams
By KPIC-TV StaffLOOKINGGLASS, Ore. - Dozens of runners and walkers hit the road Saturday morning in Lookingglass, to help raise money for the Roseburg High School and middle school cross-country teams. The Lookingglass Block Run and Walk featured runners and walkers of all ages and all talent levels, for a 5-mile run or 2-mile run or walk. This is the 12th year of the event, and Roseburg High Cross-country Coach Nathan Eckman said they had a lot of volunteers help out to put on the event. Eckman said it was the biggest turnout he has ever had for the event, and he is hoping the money raised will buy enough sweat suits for all the cross country runners that turn out for the teams next fall. "This is the big boy this year, we had 160 pre sign-ups and about 70 or 80 people signed up the day of the race so we're starting to feel almost like the Boston Marathon, so it's good." Speaking of marathons, the first finisher, in the 5-mile, who came in far ahead of the rest of the field, was John Ngigi of Glide, who gained fame by winning the Portland Marathon last year. "it was an ok course," he said. "If I'd had somebody else to run with, I would have been faster than that." The first female finisher in the 5-mile race was Dr. Sarah Agsten of Winchester. The 5-mile course went through Lookingglass around to Dairy Loop Road and back to the Lookingglas School. Two-mile runners and walkers went out a mile and back, and there were many who walked and ran with dogs and kids, helping raise money for the cross country teams. |
