MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. -- The South Umpqua Lancers continue to build up their program, with 55 players turning out this year, including 19 freshman.

Head coach Kevin Hubbard hopes his young team can translate their enthusiasm into some victories. "We're very competitive, and we're deep, so there's competition at all the places, it's not just kids stepping in saying, "I got this because of this." It's all that way," said Hubbard.

Nathan Phillips, a senior tight end and linebacker, told KPIC News that they have pretty much filled all the holes they had in the roster. "I've seen a lot of good things, like we were talking about, those kids that haven't come out, we have kids that are stepping up and filling the spot just fine," said Phillips. "It's fun to see this group come together, and we're doing really well."

Dakota Senger is a junior running back, and says the team is very focused. "Our goal is to make the playoffs, and I really believe we're gonna get there," he said. "Once we get past that, then make new goals and hopefully achieve them."

The Lancers open at home this Friday against Newport at 7:00 p.m.
