EUGENE, OR - Marist senior Taylor Walcott won the 100m and 200m, but the Spartans fell short in the 5A team race, finishing second to Summit.
Walcott won the 100m in 10.96. He was glad that he won, but diasppointed in his time. Walcott acknowledged that the weather conditions weren't quite right for fast times on Saturday.
"It means a lot," said Walcott. "My dad used to run track here. So, it's cool to win state on this track two times in-a-row. It's kinda nice."
He came later back to win the 200m as well (22.51).
The Spartans finished with 67.5 points while Summit had 88. Marshfield placed fourth with 45 points.
The South Eugene girls held a two point lead on Gresham and a seven point lead on St. Mary's heading into the final event of the day, the 4X400m relay. So, the Blues needed to win or place second in the relay to win the team championship. South did not have a team in that relay. St. Mary's won the 4X400m relay to earn 10 points and beat the Axe by three for the 6A team title.
Earlier in the day, St. Mary's Paige Rice won the 1500m in 4:31.99. South Eugene runners went 2-3. Freshman Sara Tsai was second and junior Erin Clark was third.
