Need a Resolution?

Need a new year’s resolution? Commit to being a mentor for kids! January is National Mentoring Month, which focuses national attention on the need for mentors. Effective mentoring programs are proven to increase a student’s school attendance, closeness to teachers and peers, self esteem, and plans for post secondary education. SMART, which has given away more than two million books, blends the benefits of mentoring with vital one-on-one reading practice for PreK-3rd grade students. Here in Douglas County, over 100 SMART volunteers are reading for an hour each week with over 300 local students. And, with more volunteers, we can read with more students!
