The serenity of the Pacific Ocean at Winchester Bay Oregon

Spending our summer close to home.

With the gas prices soaring through the roof, we stayed closer to home in Douglas County this summer. From the serenity of the splashing waves of the Pacific Ocean at Winchester Bay to the base of Mt. Thielsen in the Cascade Mountain Range near Diamond Lake, Douglas County's beauty stretches more than 5000 square miles.
One of our family's favorite places this summer has been spending time absorbing the breath taking natural beauty of the Colliding Rivers from the boat landing in Glide, less than a mile from our home. Glide is located near the center of Douglas County.
Looking east from where we often sit, we can see the awesome and rare phenomenon where the North Umpqua River and Little River collide head on. From this special sitting place, we have watched swimmers and boaters engaging in their own summer fun. But even more exciting than that, we have watch deer and sheep on the north banks, graze their way down to the river for a refreshing cold drink. The turkey vultures circle overhead, catching the wind currents and soaring higher and higher. An osprey dives down and splashes into the river directly in front of where we are sitting, he victoriously comes up with a small fish. As the osprey retreats toward the old snag tree located between the river and Hwy 138 to indulge in it's catch, a bald eagle comes from a place unknown and attacks the osprey to steal it's fish. This time the eagle is the victorious one as the osprey surrenders it's meal and flees with empty talons. Yes, this has all happened in a single day. Whether watching the amazing raptor birds above or the cinnabar caterpillars and moths eating away on the wild daisies, we are so fortunate to live in a place such as this that is filled with such wonders and beauty.
Staying closer to home has been a blessing for us. We have only missed out, if we allow ourselves to believe we've missed out by staying close to home. Personally, the only thing we have really missed out on has been the expense of the high priced gas. And that is a void we don't mind missing out on.
