I have hiked a few trails in my "Thundering Waters" BLM guide I got from the forest service. Steamboat Falls had no picture but was rated as an easy 100 ft. trail to a falls.
Well it's not a 100 ft trail... more like 20ft. The falls is directly below campsite #5. So if your looking for a nice hike with a waterfall don't go here. On the other hand if you need somewhere to camp with a waterfall, this is your spot. The top of the falls is a man made pool area with a level concrete area right beside it. it almost looks like a public pool with a waterfall draining out of it. Plenty of space for a BBQ or Picnic or to put your clothes on the concrete, if your a skinny dippin hippie. The falls themselves are segmented so no sliding down them, but I did climb straight up them. It was semi-slippery but refreshing. On the far side of the falls (opposite the concrete) there are cliffs to jump off of into the water below. They are only maybe 15-25 feet high but very fun to jump anyway. The rocks below are all visable and the climb back up was very easy.
I would definatly suggest this as a camping/swimming spot. When I went nobody else was swimming. I had the place all to myself despite the 90+ tempature. If people were there I imagine it could comfortably accomidate 10-15 familys or groups of people. Also I found no pollution, no broken bottles, empty beer cans, chip bags, hyperdermic needles nothing. On my 1-10 scale this recieves a 7.
