I was standing at the range cooking when I heard a loud double thump from the hallway of our home. I stepped from the kitchen to see what was going on when my heart skipped as I found our fifteen year old passed on the hallway floor with blood trickling from his lip. He was only 36 hours into a new medication and immediately I knew something was terribly wrong. As my husband stayed with our son, my trembling fingers called 9-1-1. Seeing those flashing lights pull into our darkened driveway only minutes later, gave me a bit of comfort as familiar faces jumped out of the responding unit to render aid to our son and to check his vitals.
The Glide Volunteer Fire Department (GFD) responds to emergency calls like this everyday.
The current GFD station was built in 1976 to the standards at that time. Over the past 35 years, the station has been added onto four different times to keep up with the additional needed emergency vehicles.
In 1976 the GFD responded to 169 calls. The number of annual calls have increased incredibly. In 2010 they responded to 419 calls and 375 calls in 2011, averaging about a call a day. To the person on the receiving end of that call, it can mean the difference between life and death.
I recently stopped by the GFD station to steal a peek at the new fire truck they had just perchased after ten years of saving, with no additional cost to the tax payers. I was given an awesome tour of the facilities along with some very valuable information.
The new $273,000 truck, #2232 is a 2012 Freightliner with a 350 horsepower Rosenbauer diesel engine. Although the truck is nearly 4.5 feet shorter than the department's #2231 truck, it seats 5 fire fighters whereas the old 1987 Ford truck only seated 2. The new truck is 28 feet and 9 inches long with a 196 inch wheel base. I was told "It will turn on a dime". With roll up doors rather than door that swing out, the truck can get in tighter spots such as next to a fence. It gives easier access to the equipment housed inside the doors such as the new 'Jaws of Life' that the department also needed to upgrade.
During my tour, I also learned of the building's deterioration that has occurred with age over the past 35 years. The building structure has water seepage and dry rot, walls are uninsulated and windows are only single pane. All the building's systems are reaching the end of their useful life span such as electrical, plumbing, heating ventilation, and the structure and roof itself. With 30 trained volunteers, the department has long since outgrown the present facilities and there is not enough room for the current vehicles.
In the event of a disaster, buildings such as hospitals, police stations and fire stations must be able to function at or above standards. Our Glide Fire Department needs to be brought up to date and up to today's standards.
There will be a Bond Measure on this November's ballot that will give Glide the opportunity to rebuild a much needed new fire station and a substation near the Glide Disposal Site. GFD has 1 fire truck and 1 water tender in reserve to equip that substation. If the bond fails, the reserve engine and tender will have to be sold due to lack of indoor, heated storage.
Also fire insurance could go up in many areas due to the decreased water carrying capacity of the fire department.
But, DON'T VOTE WITHOUT KNOWING THE FACTS! There are two community meetings scheduled for Wednesday, September 19th and Thursday, September 27th from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm to discuss the Bond. Come to the station, take a look around and find out how November's Bond Measure will work to better serve the Glide community. Let the Firefighter and EMT's know if you would be willing to support replacement of the existing building.

Glide added 14 new names to the Veteran's Memorial in a packed house Memorial Day ceremony. Colors were presented and retired by BSA Troop 112 and the Glide High School band played the Star Spangled Banner. On the 150th Anniversary year of Taps, Tony DeAgnes brought many to tears with the breath taking sound of Taps being played through a bugle, while Glide High School student Sarah Engle sang "America the Beautiful". Pastor Mike Miller of the Glide Baptist Church gave the Invocation and Benediction. At 10:30 a.m. the thunder vibrated through the overcast sky as an F-15 Eagle did a flyover. All in all it was a wonderful day to commemorate the day set aside to remember our Veteran's who died while in service. Thank you to all Veteran's and Serviceman for your unselfish service to our country.
