Driving through Stewart Park on Sunday, March 24, I happened to notice that the osprey nest overlooking the South Umpqua River and Stewart Park was occupied again. I mentioned to my husband that it appeared the ospreys were back and a bird was in the nest, but we drove on and did not stop. On Monday, I was passing through there again and pulled off the road to get a closer look with my camera. It wasn't until the picture was taken and I was viewing it that my husband noticed that it wasn't an osprey after all. A Canadian goose had taken over the osprey's nest and was quite content to be sitting up high looking over the city. I was uncertain whether she was sitting on eggs or not. If the goose has laid her eggs up high, it will be a real eye opener for her little goslings should they survive their predators when it comes time to get their feet wet. The nest has been occupied by a pair of osprey for as far back as I can remember. They may not be too kind to the goose should they return to find she has taken up residence in their domain.
